The island is named after the demigod Maui who is said to have pulled the Hawaiian islands up from the sea and lassoed the sun at Haleakala Volcano. When the renown Hawaiian King Kamehameha was a young warrior in 1790 he took control of Maui by winning a fierce battle in Iao Valley, and Lahaina soon became the capital of the united Hawaiian Islands under King Kamehameha. Sugarcane soon became a driving force of Hawaii's economy with plantation workers coming from China, Japan, the Philippines and many other places.
